Signed and dated 1887, this painting was exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1887 as #562 'Evening in the Meadows'.

Thomas Sidney Cooper was one of England's best known animal painters, specializing in scenes with cows and sheep around water in the counties of East Anglia, just to the north of his home in London. Cooper's work was first exhibited at The Royal Academy in 1833, and a total of 266 of his works were exhibited there prior to his death at the age of 99 in 1902.
